Position Summary

Position Summary

The position of Donation Driver and Attendant is at New Way YFC Thrift Store and is responsible for the pick-up of merchandise from donors, safely packing the merchandise in the New Way Thrift Truck, returning to the store, and unpacking merchandise from the truck.  This position will also interact with the public, process sales transactions, receive donated items, process donations, and restock the store. This position also oversees teen employees, developing their skills and mentoring them in work ethic. There will be opportunities to be involved in direct ministry activities, as New Way is a ministry site for Kalamazoo Youth for Christ. Building relationships with adult and teen volunteers is a key job function. 

Essential Functions

New Way Team Member Responsibilities:

New Way YFC Thrift Store is a Faith-based store under the direction of Youth For Christ Kalamazoo. All employees are representatives of both of these organizations while working at New Way and will uphold the following standards of conduct.

  • Arriving at the work site with enough time to be ready to work at the start time.
  • Arriving in the designated work uniform.
  • Maintaining a positive and professional attitude; no cursing, foul language, or offensive speech are permitted.
  • Being the best possible steward of the resources with which New Way has been entrusted.
  • Demonstrating a strong work ethic; making the most of every work hour and serving others while doing so.
  • Sorting, tagging, and hanging clothing as directed.
  • Intaking and sorting donations.
  • General housekeeping, as directed.
  • Checking out customers and bagging items while demonstrating excellent customer service.
  • Maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
  • Reporting any safety concerns to the General Manager or staff member in charge.
  • Completing all assigned tasks on time as directed by the New Way General Manager or staff member in charge.
  • Assisting with any other tasks as directed by the New Way General Manager.
  • Maintaining personal integrity and professional courtesy at all times.

Donation Driver Responsibilities: 

  • Load, unload, and assist in sorting and pricing all donated materials  
  • Screen for product usability  
  • Communicating with store management regarding incoming donations  
  • Occasionally supervising volunteers or interns, making their experience on the truck meaningful and enjoyable  
  • Drive the New Way vehicle to pick up and return donated goods to the store
  • Make deliveries to customers as required  
  • Maintain an effective working relationship with all store staff, volunteers, donors, and customers.
  • Operate a forklift  
  • Answer telephone and provide store information, and directions, meeting the caller's needs  
  • Manage requests from donors and produce daily pickup schedules  
  • Coordinate helper schedule with the General Manager
  • Routine cleaning and straightening of Store vehicles, keeping them neat and clean  
  • Screen for product usability when donors call, email, or bring in donations  
  • Other duties as assigned by the General Manager, or Supervisory Staff.
  • Cash register and cash handling; learning a Point of Service System
  • Demonstrating excellent customer service skills
  • Displaying excellent phone skills
  • Dealing patiently with difficult customers
  • Stocking and inventory management
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
  • Ability to move large furniture with carts or dollies.

Spiritual Responsibilities:

  • Seek God’s guidance and wisdom, through prayer and meditation, for the organization as a whole as well as for specific ministry initiatives.
  • Participate and lead regular times of prayer, devotion, and worship as a regular aspect of your role within YFC.
  • Teach and preach from the Holy Bible at YFC staff meetings, conferences, camps, and events.
  • Model empathy, humility, and care for all people. This includes promoting equity and inclusion in word and in the practice of faith expression.

YFC employees have an opportunity to be commissioned or licensed as a minister of the Gospel through the established Youth for Christ process, and/or ordained by an outside body recognized by Youth for Christ USA.

Credentials Required & Preferred Education:

  • High School Diploma and Associate degree preferred
  • Valid Michigan Driver’s License
  • Experience driving a Box Truck or large vehicles
  • Ability to operate or learn to operate the New Way truck liftgate
  • Ability to spend the majority of the shift out on pick-ups within the greater Kalamazoo area. 
  • Work may require climbing in and out of the New Way Thrift truck, considerable standing, bending, kneeling, and reaching in awkward and tiring positions   
  • Minimum of six months’ work experience  
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain a good driving record
  • A passion to drive production, sales, customer service, and customer experience is a must
  • Management experience is a plus
